[Bell Historians] Pune, India

I suspect the soldiers story refers to the tale told by A Patrick Canon? He
was in the Indian army during the war. Probably deemed unsuitable to serve
in the ordinary British army!
He was based there in Pune for a while and it was customary to have church
parade every Sunday.
Pat claimed to have bribed a virger to let him up the tower where he found
a bit of rope and attached it to the tenor.
At the end of the service the soldiers lined up on the square outside and
awaited the order to march off which was given when the clock struck 12
noon.
Somewhat earlier Pat started pulling up the Tenor. Chaos ensued with orders
being given to march off then countered etc.
Pat was court marshalled for this and spent several weeks in the glass
house where apparently he had the company of another ringer although I
don't remember who.
 However it was worth it to Pat to be the only one ever to ring there.
 He confirmed that the tower rocked around very alarmingly.
