Assuming the increment is fixed (which I believe it must be), it can be 
assumed less than 1 per stage for large enough N, since for integer k,

kN = k (mod N-1)

e.g. a sequence from minor of a(1), d(4), e(7=-2) continues f(10=-1), 
*(13=0), a(16=1), b, c, etc
