Sorry to reply to myself, but while walking home I had a flash 
  of inspiration on how the inelegant finish can be avoided - by 
  reversing the composition....
   
  Not too surprisingly, the start isn't particularly elegant. 
  However it does result in the addition of tittums at the first 
  course end, and leaves (nearly) all the other properties 
  unchanged.
