"Using the block M,H,W has been a good system but the end result has always been too long or too short. Even so I have bettered 18 calls with a peal of 5472 changes in just 15 calls"

Richard, the key to reducing the number of calls is having whole courses without any calls.  In Bristol Max, this can be achieved eg by going from a Middle to a Home, from a Home to a Wrong, etc.

See for example the 2-part David Pipe composition discussed on here a few months ago: this has 12 calls in the whole peal (and is also very musical)
