At the end of April, Don Morrison quickly and impressively managed to produced a composition for 23 "arbitrary" treble-dodging major methods which I generated at random (see http://www.bellringers.net/pipermail/ringing-theory_bellringers.net/2010-April/003375.html). These methods had no constraints as to the number of consecutive blows, or symmetry, or places made in a change, etc - the only constraint was that they had a true plain course. The methods consequently had a very "random walk" character, and the resulting peal would be extremely difficult to ring.
The only slight problem was that I screwed up a bit in the methods I generated. They weren't completely random, as I missed out some of the possible changes (eg in the first section I didn't alow for the possibility of a 3678 change). This was a bit embarrassing.
I quickly spotted the mistake, re-generated a new list of truly random methods, and passed these to Don.
Don has now managed to produce a new composition for the revised, truly random methods I provided. See his email below - I'm copying here (with his permission) for completeness and "closure" on this.

Contains 92 runs of four or more consecutive bells either at the back
or at the front, consisting of 6 each 5678s,etc, 7 8765s etc, 4 5678s

Also contains 54 backstroke 87s.
The complete search required 4 hours and 26 minutes of total processor
time for set up, and then 86 days, 12 hours and 18 minutes of total
processor time for the actual searching. However, all of this was
spread across six different cores on three different machines. The
total time would probably have been a little less if I hadn't run two
searches in parallel on each of the three dual core machines. The
three machines were configured slightly differently from one another,
but all had 2.something GHz Intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processors, a few
MB of cache and a few GB of memory.
In completing this search 2.6(10)^10 nodes were visited. If you work
out a rate of node visitation you'll see this appears much slower than
something like SMC32. However, far fewer nodes were visited than
something like that would have done as I do much more aggressive
dynamic pruning of the search tree. Resulting, of course, in needing
to visit fewer nodes, but at an increased cost for each node that
does have to be visited.
A total of 219 different callings popped out.
They are appended below, and are also attached as a tab delimited text
file. The first column is the calling itself, the second the part
head, then counts of various potentially musical arrangements of bells.
