My other thought, tonight, is that we shouldn't be too worried about a 
certain amount of ambiguity.

I am quite at ease with a view of the world which says that a "method" 
is a very general way of producing a piece of change-ringing, and an 
"ordinary" method a subset of this based on a static sequence of 
changes; but where we also use "method" quite happily to refer only to 
the latter category. That's basically the common usage amongst ringers, 
anyway.
