For what it is worth, the late Very Revd Dr Hewlett Johnson, the "Red Dean=
" of Canterbury, was Vicar of Dunham Massey before becoming Dean of Manches=
ter, from where he went on to Canterbury. His autobiography "Searching fo=
r Light" contains a passage relating to a row between himself and the ringe=
rs - he reported that he was able to resort to the chimes. Of course that =
could mean something quite different, but it suggests that they were altern=
atives. And he was the Vicar in 1914 !
I remember the Red Dean well, a very kindly man and a good friend to the Ca=
nterbury Cathedral Company - he had the Cathedral bells rehung and the teno=
r recast in 1951. More importantly, he presided over the recasting of that=
excellent ring of ten at Manchester in 1925.
The Dunham Massey row clearly did not affect him too much.

A bit of research tells me that the bells were cast at the same time=20
as the ten, Taylors 1854. The chiming bells were sold in 1914 to pay=20
for a new clock! I would still like to know if the two sets of bells=20
were "as one", or separate.
