Of course, Sir Walter Tapper, not Temple Moore. Their stately Gothic style =
has much in common.
Re: the weights of the new chime; the sixth is 8-2-18, not the same as the =
seventh!
I shall have to stop writing emails late at night!

When the church was rebuilt by Temple Moore a new central tower was ere=
cted, having only a lofty ground floor and the present chiming chamber and =
the bell chamber above that. Owing to doubts about stability (which persis=
t to-day) the bells which were going to be recast anyway were made to a chi=
ming scale:

According to Pevsner St Mary's is by Walter Tapper (also responsible fo=
r the East end of the college of the Resurection, Mirfield). Temple Moor b=
uilt St Wilfrid's which is similar in its cruciform design but earlier and =
far finer. The structure, or at least the surface of the structure, contin=
ues to be a problem at St Mary's - there is hardly a surface which isn't cr=
umbling away - and the church and diocese might now be looking for a radica=
l solution to the 90 year old problem.

What a tragedy about the peal board - one may be forgiven for hoping th=
at the bits were carefully retrieved and might one day be restored.
They are all pieced together in the chiming chamber - I shall get on to=
the case.
