David of course means 1/5 (the present 2/6, as he says), at All Saints, No=
rwich. In 1914 JT&Co fitted the three old bells all with wooden stocks, c=
omplete with traditional supporting ironwork and traditional stays and slid=
ers; the new second with a cast-iron box-section stock and a traditional st=
ay and slider; and the treble with a wrought iron 'bar' stock with Hastings=
stay and radius slide. The reason was and it that a little room was saved =
thereby, the bell being squeezed into the north-east corner of the tower.
For the same reason, the tenor of the new ring of eight at Felixstowe has a=
Hastings stay and radius slide, and the rest traditional traditional stays=
and sliders. But I can't remember seeing Hastings stays fitted to timber s=
tocks, as I was telling someone who asked me only last week!=20

Some of the bells at Ambrosden, Oxon - I think! What date are Kirkby
Overblow? Presumably it was before canon retaining headstocks came in.
All Saints, Norwich (1914), as I recall, had wooden stocks on the back
three, and traditional stays and sliders on all except 1/6, which had a
Hastings. Don't know why. Since restoration, the back three are on canon
retaining stocks, and the Hastings stay remains on what is now 2/6.
