Many medieval towers collapsed, especially if they were built over the
crossing, as the weight pushed out the piers and the tower basically fell
through.

Chertsey Abbey did this in July 1370 - the "Abbey Bell" in St. Peter's
Chertsey is a 1380 recasting of a 1310 bell damaged in the tower collapse.

St. Barnabas, Ranmore in Surrey (8, 20-2-14) does seem to have some alarming
cracks in the arches of the crossing. I expect (hope!) that the Diocesan
architect is on top of it (no pun intended!).
