Just to add that Murphy may have got wise to not putting inflamatory (Catho=
lic and nationalist) ornaments on his bells for English churches, as there =
seem to be several examples without the harp mark (and not just Wooburn). =
The two Murphy bells in Warwickshire - at the RC churches in Coventry (1851=
- a 43.5" bell) and Warwick (1860 - an 18" bell) - are without the harp ma=
rk too.
The Great Exhibition bells ended up at Kings Cross Station, with a clock by=
Dent. There are rubbings of the inscriptions in the Society of Antiquaries=
Library (Tyssen collection) and the details were - diameters 32", 36" and =
52". 1. J. MURPHY FOUNDER DUBLIN 1852 (Harp mark); 2. Same; 3. AT LENGTH NE=
AR JOY BE SOUND FROM ERINS VOICE ALBERT COMMANDS AND IRISH BELLS REJOICE J =
MURPHY FOUNDER DUBLIN 1851
Glad to add the Southampton example to the list - which church, Matthew?
