Having consulted another member of the touring party of 1968 who confirms t=
he story we think it was a quarter peal.
That would fit with APC's habits and inclinations at the time.
Are the QP records available?
I would hate to think that ,not only were we gullible in believing George T=
hoday, but APC was pulling everyones leg as well.

Sorry to spoil a good story, but the Llandaff & Monmouth peal database (w=
hich contains details of ALL peals rung at Association towers) shows that P=
at Cannon rang three peals at Ebbw Vale - in 1968, 1970, 1971. He only rang=
the tenor once, to Superlative on 24 October 1970, in 3 hours 22 minutes. =
He never called a peal there.
=20=20=20
While serving in South Wales during and after WW2, he rang peals at Bridg=
end, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Pentre, Llanfrechfa and Llenelly (Gilwern), calli=
ng all but the Cardiff peal. He did call a fast peal of Bob Major on the he=
avy and difficult eight at Pentre.

Jim Hedgecock: <I remember there being a device to count the number of ti=
mes that the=20
tenor had struck - but it was 1971 when I rang there.>
=20=20=20
There is a story about the counter.....
=20=20=20
Pat Cannon was serving in S Wales during WW2 when the bann was lifted. =
=20
He took a band to Ebbw Vale and rang a peal of Plain Bob Major I think, b=
ut in a very quick time... possible less than 3 hours.
=20=20=20
Anyway the local tower captain took the view that Cannon had left a cours=
e or two out of this peal and had the counter made and fixed to the tenor s=
o that he could check in future. He was probably right.
=20=20=20
There is another story about another band that included Cannon ringing a =
peal there in the 60's.=20
A certain Mr Thoday calculated that the peal would include his 1 milliont=
h row in peal ringing and also that it would be a 65 roll-up.
I think we might have been a touch gullible but, never the less, George w=
as a big man with the stats so we worked out what the counter would read at=
the millionth row and set off.=20
=20=20=20
As we struck the landmark, a certain Mr Bonham on the 6th, mouth wide ope=
n, staring at the counter all agog, missed his dodge an consequently wrecke=
d the row.
=20=20=20
Thoday was incandescent. He ranted on about how many peals he had carried=
someone through and how now he had wrecked the highlight of his career... =
or some such rubbish.
=20=20=20
All very funny and did we laugh? You were allowed to enjoy yourself in p=
eals in those days.
