Well, there are such things as bar-bells - one, at a place called
Allerton-Bywater, St Mary the Less (8) was actually listed as such in the
older editions of "Dove".

These have been taken down and there remains a single bell in the cote.
They were hung on the west wall of the church and there is a set of little
tubes set in a block of concrete which presumeably guided the "ropes" into
the building. www.riponandleedsbells.org.uk will soon have an entry in the
Whitkirk deanery - I have taken the photos but not finished the web page!
