They were (are) a fine Taylor ring of eight. of which the 5th was cast by T=
aylors in 1904, being intended as the 4th of a proposed ring of ten. The re=
maining seven were cast in 1957 by Taylors from the metal of the eight from=
the former St John's Church, Deritend, Birmingham. The official weight of =
the tenor was 14-0-8 , note F. The Birmingham Mail of 31.12.1938 carried a=
picture of the Deritend bells in their tower, "which is to be demolished. =
The Bishop (Dr Barnes) says that two aplications have been received for the=
m and suggests they go to the poorest parish which desires them". A pictire=
of them following removal appeared 24.6.1944. J Oldham and J P Fidler of T=
aylors first visited Latimer's in May 1950 to assess the possibility of put=
ting the bells in. The inscriptions of 1-4 and 6-8 ex Deritend were reprodu=
ced on the new bells, the 5th being the 1904 bell.

The dedication at Latimer's was recorded in the RW of 1st May 1959 and the =
story of the subsequent removal to Perry Barr to replace the 1868 Taylor ei=
ght and the dedication there was told in the RW of 1st June 1972.=20
The main reason for their transfer from Latimer's was because the bells wer=
e not appreciated in the largely ethnic area of Handswoth / Winson Green, a=
nd also that it was next to impossible to raise a band to ring them on Sund=
ays. Apparently they were usefukl for peal factory purposes, but this came =
to be resented locally.

Latimer's is a gracious church finished 1904, by Bidlake - one of his very =
finest. The tower is truly magnificent. When Richard next travels from Shre=
wbury to Birmingham by train, he can see it - quite near Winson Green Priso=
n - from the train, on the left as you go into Brum.

I have a number of pictures of this fine church (and Deritend and Perry Bar=
r). The bells were apparently an excellent complement to the architecture a=
t Latimer's, and are a joy to ring at Perry Barr.

Read all about it in CJP's forthcoming magnum opus.

What was the story behind the installation and subsequent removal of=20
this ring? Does anyone have any pictures of the church, or bells?

M.
