MessageHomerton were removed following the closure of that church as an Ang=
lican place of worship - it is still in use as a Afro-Caribean Pentecostal =
Church. The oak frame is now at Bacton, Norfolk holding the front four bell=
s of the old chime of five plus two new bells (old tenor remains hung dead)=
and the bells (five of them recast from All Hallows Staining, City) are on=
offer to St Nicholas, Deptford in place of their long-ago scrapped eight.

For full details of Deptford and following through to All Hallows Staining =
and Homerton, see http://kent.lovesguide.com/deptford_st_nicholas.htm

The Revd R.F Bashford (also posted as "the leader" on the Parish notice b=
oard) was incumbent of Homerton at some time. Were these bells removed dur=
ing his time there?

First of all, to Richard's letter:
=20=20=20=20=20
Mr Smyth, whose name appears on the recast tenor, was very proud of the=
new bells and was most disappointed at the outcome. CJP thinks I am unfair=
in suggesting that the place was destined to be "useful as a peal factory"=
(my words) and in fairness to the SMG, I think that the number of voluntee=
rs to learn was equally disappointing.

He was succeded in 1971 by the Revd A. J. F. Voake, and it was he, not =
Mr Smyth, who didn't like (the) bells - and they were gone within the year!

The present Rector is the Revd R. F. Bashford, who has been there since=
1981.

The story about GF with the rope being mistaken for the Executioner is =
quite possibly true. The bells were dedicated in 1959 and in the time they =
were there, only one execution took place at nearby Winson Green Prison (in=
August 1962). Two years later hanging was abolished.

Coming now to Neil's query, I don't know about the Deritend peal boards=
. If they aren't at Perry Barr, the chances are that they did not go to Lat=
imer's (they are not there now). Remember that Deritend was demolished in 1=
944, and little care was taken of so many things at the time.

Going up that mighty tower at Latimer's is depressing. The tower is on =
the south side, at the junction of nave and chancel. A short staircase lead=
s up to the high ringing room, into which the back of the organ intrudes. T=
here are large and lofty gothic windows. A long draught - there was formerl=
y a home-made rope-guide, also an Ellacombe chiming apparatus. The place is=
bare and bleak now, with only the rope-holes to remind one that there were=
ever bells there. An iron ladder up the wall brings you into the belfry. T=
he two sets of foundation joists remain, amongst which is hung a tiny 19thC=
brassfoundry-type bell, wholly unworthy of the church. There is a secondha=
nd 3-cwt bell on the ground floor of the tower, by Barwell, but it was neve=
r hung. Another long ladder takes you to the roof. NB - the place in infest=
ed with pigeons.

Strangely, another church whose bells ring elsewhere has a total immers=
ion font - St Mary's, Lambeth where I rang several times, the bells fitting=
s and frame being transferred to Caterham Valley about the same time as Per=
ry Barr received the bells of Bishop Latimer's.

Vicar never liked them. Same old chap is still there I think. Also =
some excuse about an unexploded bomb near the tower!!
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
George was accused of being a hangman after a peal there, when he wen=
t into the lcoal with an old bellrope over his shoulder
