>In about 1758 an attempt was made to 'solder' the crack in a bell named
>Dunstan at Canterbury Cathedral. The story continues that the bell was
>recast by Wm Chapman, foreman to Lester & Pack. During the casting of the
>bell a youth (William Mears) showed great interest and led to the
>introduction of the family to bellfounding.
And the present Great Dunstan has itself been welded once by Soundweld. I
believe that it is now cracked again but it has been decided not to weld it
this time.
