It seems a bit churlish to criticize information kindly offered. But there
have been a number of books published recently, to say nothing of
contributions on this site, where particular care has been taken to ensure
accuracy in rendering inscriptions. The versions for Liverpool recently
given on this site have been available in print for many years, and are not
wholly accurate. I am tempted to offer an Easter Egg as a prize to someone
who would give an ACCURATE rendering of the Liverpool inscriptions: i.e. in
Capital letters (or otherwise as appropriate), with the punctuation (or lack
of it) as on the bell, in lines (separated by obliques / ) as arranged on
the bell, with the position on the bell and any decoration on the bell. I
will give a start with Lioverpool by giving the FULL inscription on Great
George:

(inscription band) MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE UNTO THE LORD ALL YE LANDS

(waist) TO THE GLORY OF GOD / IN THANKFULNESS FOR GREAT MERCIES /
RECEIVED AND IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE / OF THE CITY OF LIVERPOOL /
WILLIAM BARON VESTEY OF KINGSWOOD / AND HIS WIFE EVELYN / WITH SIR EDMUND
HOYLE VESTEY BARONET / AND HIS WIFE ELLEN / GAVE ME IN THE YEAR / 1937 / AND
IN MEMORY OF KING GEORGE V / NAMED ME / GREAT GEORGE

(opposite) JOHN TAYLOR & CO., FOUNDERS, LOUGHBOROUGH

(decoration) moulding wires 3:2-2:3-2

The last line is particularly important as Taylors' part in providing for
Liverpool the second heaviest and deepest toned bell in the country is more
often than not ignored.

I'm told that the foundry data on the 13 ringing bells is confined to a
single medallion - surprising for such a significant ring - and I wonder.
Granted the name is in full on the tenor, I would welcome verification or
otherwise of why and how the inscriptions differ from the "com, monly
received" portions.

I do appreciate the Liverpool sites and would not like either Jonathon or
Sam to see this as constructive criticism of praiseworthy ventures.

Thanks

DLC
