BRIGHTON ST PAUL

The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th & tenor bells were dismantled by Harry
Parkes and broken up to "chute" them over the organ. The frame was also
dismantled, being a huge affair, designed in quarters with an extra space
for the bourdon. A "new" frame using timbers from the old was made for the
bourdon, which was drilled, had its canons taken off (all done in the tower)
and was rehung with a horseshoe headstock and wheel etc for slow-swinging.
The treble was rehung in a simple frame, also made from old timbers, for
stationary chiming. They were overhauled c1990 when the huge timber lantern
in which they hung was extensively repaired following damage in the 1988
hurricane.

For the record, 5, 6, 7, 8 and Bourdon were originally intended as a mighty
eight and were installed by C&G Mears, with quarter-wheels, in 1847. Reality
was faced in 1873 and the four smaller became 5, 6, 7, 8 and four new
trebles were added by Mears and all including the big one hung for ringing.

Don't know when they were last rung, but peals were rung there in the C19th.
They were in a dreadful state by 1959.
