Apropos David Beacham's observation regarding the stiffness factor of modern beams. Universal Beam Sections are manufactured to BS4-1993 which have, basically, parallel flanges. It would appear that this design criteria may not consider torsional loads, to which such a beam may be subjected within a Bell-frame structure. It is very unlikely that beams manufactured to the relevant BS, installed within a bellframe, and subject to torsion loading(ie at 90degrees to its axis) exceed two metre of unsuported bolted or welded structure.QED no problems related to fixation within the brickwork, stonework within the Tower walls.Over two metres of 'open' beam, suggest welding gusset plates at appropriate intervals.
