Church Bells.

Hello Everyone,

I've just received a copy, believed to be 1889, of this booklet.

Although there is nothing about bells, there are some lovely engravings of
many of the older London churches and a small history on each.

It says that it is 'Church Bells' Album No. 4.  It was published by Church
Bells Office, London.

Does anyone have any idea of the previous 4 albums or if there were any
more?

Best wishes

Alan

Church Bells was a weekly church magazine that had a Bells column in it that
was certainly started by Ellacombe. The journal started on New Year's Eve
1871 and continued for at least 26 years. There are some copies in the CC
library and 26 years worth at Fulham.

The columns are quite fascinating and, amongst other things, include a lot
of 'peals', some of which are what we would call full peals. As the
magazine pre-dates 'Bell News', there is probably a wealth of interesting
information to be gathered from it.

I have suggested that, once the 'Bell News' CD is issued consideration
should be given to scanning these columns for a CD.

One of the features of 'Church Bell' was the front page which was a drawing
either of a prominent cleric or of a church. Inside would be details of the
person or church; the latter sometimes includes the bells.

I would guess that your 'Notable Churches ...' consists of some of these
drawings and comments.

James Jerram produced a scrapbook of London churches which is now in the
Salisbury Reference Library. Well worth looking at for pre-WWI churches,
bells and organs. Jerram's manuscript 'Church Bells of Wiltshire', on which
H.B. Walters based his work, is also in Salisbury Reference Library.
