They were a totally derelict five in a remote area, the tenor being
split almost in two and the medieval 4th fallen. That was
rehung 'dead', the split tenor and very poor toned 19thC third were
scrapped. The late Bill Hughes generously kept the two trebles by for
18 months until we failed to find a home for them - he had actually
paid the parish for the metal and so was out of pocket for their
value at a time when bell metal was fetching a high price.

Bill Hughes also tried very hard to find a home for St John
Maddermarket bells (this was the days before CCCBR Rescue Funds and
Keltek), feeling strongly that it was criminal to break up such a
fine peal of six.

Yes, Richard is quite correct. It was a time of intense reorganization and he will doubtless remember the yard being cumbered up with the bells from St Magnus, Southwark HT, "Botolph St Morley" as well as the temporary residence of the Maddermarket bells and the even shorter one of the eights from Camberwell St George (a good Dobson eight, whose destruction WAH also detested doing), the Shaw eight from Bradford (interesting, but not as good as his handbells!), and that lovely G&J chime of 1952, from Bognor, which ended up in Africa somewhere.

Then, out the back, 'in the weeds' were the five from Aveley (the back 3 eventually rehung as a chime) and the ex-Colchester six, now at Basildon.

Seems like yesterday ...
