I did the report on the Bells for the CCC a few years ago, the results of which appear in the appropriate Pastoral Measure Report on the building, obtainable from the CBC.

The nave of the church was unroofed after WW2 and the chancel arch infilled; more recently that arch has shown signs of subsidence which has led to formal redundancy.

The three bells are the derelict back three of five. The two trebles were stolen in the 1960's, and the recent publicity enhances the risk of the others going the same way.

The two Butler bells of 1633 are tonally poor but historically of considerable interest; the tenor an average bell by Pack & Chapman 1775. The two stolen trebles were also by Butler.

This means, I think, that the church has been declared redundant. The St. Albans Diocesan Board of Finance is required to find an alternative use and is responsible for the building during this 'Waiting Period'.

  Thanks for this. Worrying.

Layston is known to us but not owned by us.

The latest scheme we heard is to convert it into a house.

I shall send your alert onto the Diocese of St Albans - which is responsible

  Thanks
