"In Chris Pickford's useful tome "Bellframes", Christopher Dalton says "The
bell-hanging industry in recent decades has generally been geared to renewal
rather than repair;.." Is this a good thing?"

It is probably due, in no small part, to the fact that there was a boom in
church building in Victorian times, and renewal in the period after the war
(certainly in and around London).  There is also much more out there to
renew, whether it is a good thing or not.
