There was a well-known ringer in the 1950s or 60s whose favourite party trick was to pull off heavy tenors without holding the tail end - he'd let the rope slide through his fingers and catch the tail end just in time.
Favourite, that is, until he mistimed the grab, and broke a rather large stay...
