Not so much bells of ale but organ pipes ofwine. That is the tradition in Germany. I found this out some years ago at thereopening of the new organ in Bath Abbey where the organ builder said that thetradition was for part payment for the organ was traditionally made in thevolume of wine which would fill the largest pipe in the organ. In the case ofthe Abbey that pipe is a wooden 32' Double Open Diapason  so rather a lot of wine!
