Peter Macdonald's is NOT the latest book on Big Ben.
The most recent - and much better (the author is a clock man and former
ringer - not a journalist) - is /Big Ben: The Great Clock and the Bells
at the Palace of Westminster/ by Chris McKay (Oxford University Press, 2010)
As I recall, it wasn't the reason it cracked - the bell was pounded with
experimental hammers that were far too heavy for safety and it broke -
but the bell was certainly too big for the shaft up which it was
intended to have been raised into the tower.
