[Bell Historians] bell dedications

I have just read in a church guidebook that the original medieval bells in
the church may not have been cast for the church as they were not dedicated
to the patron saint of that church.

 

Could this be true?  And are there any other known cases?

 

The church in question is currently dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, but in
the 19th century was dedicated to St Nicholas.  The bells were dedicated to
St Thomas (2), St Anne and St Mary.
