Hi
I'd just like to record how I, too, benefitted from Cyril's kind and tireless enthusiasm for ringing research. Although I never met him, our correspondance was very productive and I had the impression of a most meticulous historian who would go out of his way to help with any request to share information and assist a novice historian like myself.
My condolences to his family.
Karl Grave

I had an emailed invite with a request to pass it on to list members. It came direct from the company, and as I recall was an open invitiation. I did forward it to the list.

Very sorry to learn of Cyril's death. He was a first rate ringing historian, and had the Central Council not consumed so much of his energy for many years - their gain, but undoubtedly our loss! - he would doubtless have written a great deal more. I owed him a great deal, as it was he who encouraged me to delve into eighteenth and nineteenth century newspapers for ringing reports in my student days and sparked my interest in research. He was also unfailingly generous in sharing his information and answering enquiries.
It is so sad that illness prevented him from completing the many projects he began, and that he and Margery had such a brief opportunity to enjoy his retirement. A fine ringer, a good man, an authority on ringing history and a dedicated servant of the exercise - his memory will live on.

Hi Peeps
Sorry to be a grump but can we please be a tad more careful when quoting
other peoples's messages? It's not a bandwidth problem (with me
anyway) but it is sometimes so difficult and time consuming to sort
out the actual, often short message from the massive quotes! Today's
digest is a prime example. :-)
While I am here, I haven't forgotten about the Bootle inscriptions.
Re pigeon poo the PCC has agreed that it is THEIR problem and not that
of the ringers and have have tendered and accepted a quote. Can't
tell you the price but it is vast. Does, though, include a physical
and biological clean up and possible culling. Anyone else have any
experience of this?
Sorry about the 2 off topic bits. :-(
John

I would like to echo Chris's sentiments at the sad loss of Cyril.
He was indeed a fine ringing, noded ringing historian and, above all,
a lovely man. I still have much of the correspondence we exchange
in the late seventies and early eighties on early ringing in Kent and
treasure the memory of long and fascinating conversations with him,
both in person and over the phone.
Our thoughts go out to Margery and the rest of his family at this
time.
Richard

Yes, David, and thank you for doing so; following the instruction on the emailed advertisement I contacted G&J who said yes, come along - the purpose of contact was simply to get numbers for the reception.
The RW advert to which Richard refers (RW 17.9.2004) p.914 clearly also states, "If interested, please contact Rachel on 020 8686 2694 or email jenny at g... "
It may not have been one of Cyril Johnston's great Croydon ringers' rallies, but it was a remarkable and worthwhile occasion.

I'm not a regular contributor to this list, nor do I really consider
myself a 'proper' bell historian, although I find much of the
discussion fascinating. However, reading these tributes to Cyril, a
thought occurs to me: Would it be possible, and appropriate, to
complete the research in one of his fields of interest in his name?
